Treasure Island Garbage Truck Hits, Kills Pedestrian

The driver said he didn’t see the pedestrian, according to Pinellas sheriff’s deputies.

TREASURE ISLAND – A man died Friday (Aug. 12) when a garbage truck hit him while he was crossing the street in front of his home, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Justin Alexander Mastry, 44, died at the scene, deputies said.

The collision happened about 9 a.m. along Bayshore Drive. Chester Tunsil, 38, of St. Petersburg, was driving a city of Treasure Island garbage truck northbound between 81st and 82nd avenues collecting garbage. Deputies said Tunsil realized he missed a house approximately three houses behind him, put the truck in reverse and began backing towards the house he missed. He hit Mr. Mastry who was crossing the street in front of his home. According to deputies, Tunsil said he didn’t see Mastry in the roadway behind him. Alcohol and/or drug impairment do not appear to be factors, deputies said.
