Pinellas Wolf Pack Accuses 25 of Drunk Driving
The overnight wolf pack, headed by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, targeted impaired drivers.
PINELLAS COUNTY – An overnight wolf pack of officers from 10 law enforcement agencies nabbed 25 drunk drivers, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.
The wolf pack did not limit itself to DUIs. In all, 42 criminal charges were filed and 138 citations were issued:
4 driving while license suspended and/or revoked with knowledge
2 possession of a controlled substance (felony)
4 possession of a controlled substance (misdemeanor)
1 fleeing and eluding (felony)
1 possession of drug paraphernalia
2 warrant arrest (felony)
2 refusal to submit to breath testing
1 other felony arrest
Total Charges – 42
14 driving while license suspended and/or revoked with knowledge
1 no valid drivers license
7 no insurance
5 safety belt violations
2 violation of drivers license restrictions
3 open container
25 other non-moving violations
45 other moving violations
Total Citations – 138
The operation was part of the sheriff’s ongoing commitment to reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage associated with traffic crashes related to impaired driving. The goal of a wolf pack is to educate drivers and create public awareness about the dangers of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and any chemical or controlled substances.
This operation was dedicated to, 38-year-old John Sorensen, who died Jan. 30 after he was struck in Dunedin by a wrong-way driver, while driving his motorcycle. The wrong way driver was impaired at the time of the crash, deputies said.
Other agencies that took part in the wolf pack: the Florida Highway Patrol and the Clearwater, Gulfport, Indian Shores, Kenneth City, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Treasure Island police departments. G4S Prisoner Transportation provided support. The wolf pack ran from 7 p.m. Friday (Dec. 16) until 5 a.m. today (Dec. 17).
