Pinellas Sheriff Charges Man in Hit and Run That Killed Skateboarder

The St. Petersburg man was arrested at a relative’s home in Hernando County.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Pinellas sheriff’s deputies today (June 27) arrested and charged a St. Petersburg man with leaving the scene of a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a skateboarder.

Arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a first degree felony, was Sterling Hubbard, 22, of 2110 Bayou Grande Drive, St. Petersburg. Hubbard was arrested in Hernando County at a relative’s home, deputies said. He was booked into the Hernando County Jail.

The crash happened about 1:42 a.m. May 8 in the area of Gulf Boulevard and 129th Avenue on Madeira Beach. Deputies say Emma M. Keown, 20, of Clermont, was traveling northbound on Gulf Boulevard on a skateboard when she was hit from behind by a truck. The truck stopped briefly before continuing north on Gulf Boulevard, according to deputies. Ms. Keown was taken to a local hospital where she later died of her injuries.
