Pedestrian Dies from Gulfport Hit and Run

The victim was hit twice. The first vehicle left the scene, Pinellas County deputies say.

GULFPORT – A pedestrian died Wednesday (Dec. 21) night when he was hit by two vehicles, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Frankie L. McCray, 41, of St. Petersburg, died at the scene, deputies said.

The crash happened about 10:20 p.m. at the intersection of 49th Street and 11th Avenue S in Gulfport. Mr. McCray was crossing 49th Street in a marked crosswalk when an unidentified vehicle traveling southbound on 49th struck him in the roadway. Deputies said the unidentified vehicle continued southbound and never stopped to help Mr. McCray.

Martin Thomas, 24, of St. Petersburg, was driving a 2012 Dodge Avenger south on 49th when he was unable to stop before striking Mr. McCray who was lying in the roadway. Deputies said Thomas stopped his vehicle at the scene. Deputies said they do not suspect Thomas was impaired at the time of the crash.

Deputies described the hit and run vehicle as being black in color, possibly a truck. They are asking that anyone with information about the crash to contact Cpl.
