Pasco School Principal Stole Money from Disabled Pupil, Deputies Say

He stole money that was given to him for safekeeping, according to Pasco sheriff’s deputies.

LAND O’ LAKES – The principal of Connerton Elementary School was arrested Thursday (Nov. 8) after he was accused of stealing money from a disabled pupil according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Edward John Abernathy, 50, of Land O’ Lakes, was charged with one count of grand theft.

Deputies said that preliminary information indicates that on Oct. 23, a 9-year-old mentally disabled pupil brought some of his parents’ money to the Land O’ Lakes school.
When teachers realized the issue, they took the money and counted it, placing it in the principal’s office.

When the child’s mother went to school to get the money, the principal gave her only $1,200 not the $2,100 her child had brought to school., deputies said. Investigation by deputies determined the principal kept the $900 difference.
