Murder Suspect Surrenders after SWAT Standoff, Sheriff Says

The man was charged with second-degree murder after he surrendered, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A man who barricaded himself inside a Tampa residence surrendered peacefully after a three-hour standoff Thursday (Feb. 9), according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

After he surrendered, Raul Rodriguez Jr., 28, was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm. Deputies said he was involved in an altercation with Jose Alonso Rodriguez, 23, inside a residence in Wimauma about 2:30 a.m. Dec. 23. During that altercation, deputies said, Raul Rodriguez Jr. shot Jose Rodriguez who died at the scene. The two were not related.

Deputies were searching for Rodriguez Jr. and confirmed that he was at a residence at 8902 Navajo Ave. in Tampa. Deputies went to the residence Thursday (Feb. 9) and, when Rodriguez Jr. refused to come out, they issued a SWAT call out. For about three hours, crisis negotiators tried to communicate with Rodriguez Jr. with no results. SWAT team members used audible distraction devices that prompted Rodriguez Jr. to peacefully surrender.
