Motorist Fired Gun While Driving Across Causeway, Clearwater Police Say

Several pedestrians were on the bridge at the time but no injuries were reported, Clearwater police said.

CLEARWATER – A Lutz man has been accused of shooting a gun out of the open sunroof of his car while driving across the Memorial Causeway bridge, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Jelani Dixon, 28, of Lutz, was charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle in public.

The incident happened about 9 a.m. Several calls came in to the police department about a Volvo traveling west on the causeway with the drivershooting a gun out of the vehicle. Officers began searching for the car and located it minutes later in the 500 block of South Gulfview Boulevard, where Dixon was arrested.

Police said that more than a half-dozen shots were fired from the Ruger .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun that officers found in the car.

Multiple pedestrians were on the bridge at the time of the incident, but, police said, no injuries were reported.
