Mother Charged in Death of 2-Month-Old Son

The baby died from exposure to cocaine, according to the Hillsborough medical examiner.

TAMPA – A Tampa woman has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of her 2-month-old son, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Megan Rand, 34, of Tampa, was charged with one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child in connection with the death of her son, Brennen Rand, 2 months.

Deputies said that, about 2:25 a.m. April 24, they were called to a Long Meadow Drive home for a report of an unresponsive child. Brennen was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

During a search of the residence, deputies said they found several items of drug paraphernalia and narcotics usage within close proximity to the baby.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be “diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage with hypothermia due to cocaine exposure.”

Deputies said they investigation led to the arrest Tuesday (Oct. 16) of Rand.
