Middle School Student Had Gun on Campus, Hillsborough Deputies Say

Tampa police had received an anonymous tip, according to the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office.

TAMPA – A seventh grader at Webb Middle School was arrested Monday (Nov. 13) after a gun and ammunition were found in his backpack, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Miguel Rocca, 14, of Tampa, was taken to the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center. He was charged with one count each of possession of a firearm on school property, a felony, and minor in possession of a firearm, misdemeanor.

Deputies said they began investigating after the Tampa Police Department forwarded an anonymous tip they received over the weekend that a student named Miguel was selling drugs on school property and was known to carry a gun.

Webb Middle administrators conducted an administrative search of Miguel’s property, and discovered an empty Diamondback Arms .380 semi-automatic pistol and two live bullets in his backpack.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the collaboration between Hillsborough County Public Schools and law enforcement’s commitment to keep every student safe.
