The woman was a plainclothes detective, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

RIVERVIEW – A Riverview man has been accused of video voyeurism after he used his cell phone to take record a woman in a restroom, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

James M. McEwen, 28, of 3513 Pavilion Palms Circle, No. 203 in Riverview, was charged with sex offense/video voyeurism, deputies said.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 4) when a plainclothes female detective saw McEwen enter the women’s restroom at the Publix, 3863 S Hwy. 301 in Riverview. Deputies said the detective also entered the restroom, went into an individual stall and locked it behind her. While in the stall, deputies said the detective noticed the shadow of a person holding a phone, who appeared to be video recording her from within a stall next to her.

The detective used her own surveillance equipment and confirmed that McEwen was video recording her attempt to use the restroom. Deputies said she arrested McEwen without incident. After the arrest, deputies said McEwen admitted taking a video of her without her permission.

Deputies said they have seized McEwen’s cell phone and will execute a search warrant to determine if there are any other victims. The surveillance video is being reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office.

Deputies are asking members of the public to contact them at (813) 247-8200 if anyone suspects they may be a victim.
