Man Beat Pregnant Woman, Hillsborough Sheriff Says
The man is the father of the woman’s unborn child, according to the Hillsborough County sheriff.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man is accused of breaking into a home and beating a woman who is pregnant with his child, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.
Kayla Challenger, 22, is seven months pregnant. She was taken to a hospital for treatment. It is unclear if there were other injuries.
Ladarius Adam Lewis, 23, was charged with one county of aggravated battery on pregnant female, two counts each of burglary of dwelling with assault or battery and battery, and four counts of false imprisonment.
Deputies said Lewis went to the residence at 10233 Morris Bridge Road in Tampa about 5:20 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 28) where he broke out the glass in the front door to get inside. Once inside, Lewis began striking Challenger with his hands and feet. Challenger and her three roommates ran into a back bedroom. Lewis followed and continued to hit Challenger and, at one point, two of her roommates. Deputies said the women eventually escaped from the bedroom and Challenger fled to a neighbor’s house. Lewis followed her inside the neighbor’s home and continued hitting her. Deputies arrived and were able to take Lewis into custody.
