Parts belonging to a black Corvette were found at the scene, Pinellas Park police said.

PINELLAS PARK – A man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run crash Tuesday (May 30) that killed a motorcycle driver, Pinellas Park police said.

John Carl Ryan, 61, of Pinellas Park, died at the scene early Tuesday morning. Ryan Andrew Mogensen, 28, of Pinellas Park, was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Mogenson was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury or death and three counts of leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

The crash happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 5500 block of 110 Avenue N. Officers were called to the scene in what originally believed to be a crash involving a 1992 Harley Davidson motorcycle that struck a parked 2014 Hyundai.

During the investigation, officers found parts belonging to another vehicle that they were able to identify as belonging to a black 2001 Chevrolet Corvette. Through a tip and other leads, police said they learned that a vehicle matching this description was scene pulling into Plantation Gardens apartment complex, which is directly across the street from the original crash location. Officers worked throughout the day to develop a lead on the location of Mogensen and his Corvette.

Police said they contacted Mogensen in the complex at which time he refused to cooperate with investigators about the whereabouts of his vehicle. Officers worked with the Pinellas County State Attorney’s Office in obtaining a search warrant for a garage on the apartment complex property that Mogensen uses. About 5:30 p.m. police served the search warrant on Mogensen’s garage where, they said, they found a 2001 Corvette with vehicle damage consistent with the vehicle parts found at the crash scene. The Corvette was seized as evidence and processing of the car continues.

After the car was found in his garage Mogensen was interviewed, Police said he admitted knowing that he struck the motorcycle in the early morning hours.
