The man stabbed himself and his mother, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

LUTZ – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office ended a SWAT standoff in Lutz early this morning (Aug. 21) when deputies took into custody a suicidal man who had stabbed himself and his mother.

Serkan Ceylani, 31, was taken into custody after the four-hour standoff. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital as a trauma alert. His mother, Hulya Ceylani, 67, had been taken to St. Joseph’s in stable condition for treatment of multiple stab wounds.

Around 1:30 a.m., deputies answered a 9-1-1 call on Garden Quilt Circle concerning a suicide attempt. Upon arrival, deputies found that Serkan Ceylani had armed himself with a screwdriver and stabbed his mother, Hulya Ceylani, multiple times in her upper body. He then barricaded himself inside the bathroom of the home he shares with his parents, his wife and two sons, ages 6 and 11.

The Hillsborough sheriff’s SWAT team, bomb squad and crisis negotiations team were all called out to the scene around 1:50 a.m. Deputies said that all efforts were made to try to negotiate with Ceylani from outside the bathroom door, but eventually, he stopped communicating with negotiators. Deputies eventually broke through the window of the bathroom to reach Ceylani and used two canisters of tear gas before confronting him.

Ceylani continued to be uncooperative once deputies were inside the bathoom so they used a taser to take him into custody.

The SWAT team immediately took Ceylani outside of the house to get him first-aid and to take him to the hospital.

Deputies said the investigation is ongoing and charges are forthcoming.
