He was found sleeping with his foot on the brake at a green traffic light, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

DUNEDIN – A Largo firefighter has been accused of driving under the influence after he was found sleeping in his car at a green traffic light, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Cruz, 26, was charged with driving under the influence. Cruz submitted a breath sample which indicated he had a BrAC of .141/.143, deputies said. He was off duty.

Cruz was found about 4:05 a.m. Saturday (May 19) sleeping at the wheel of his 2013 Dodge Dart. Deputies said they found the Dodge facing westbound and stopped in the intersection of Main Street and Bass Boulevard in Dunedin.

Deputies pulled behind the vehicle and noted the brake lights were on even though the traffic light was a steady green. Deputies put on their overhead emergency lights, but the Dodge remained stationary.

When deputies checked, they said the found Cruz sleeping, with his foot on the brake. The Dodge was in drive and there were no other occupants inside the car. Deputies said they knocked on the window multiple times before Cruz responded. They had to assist Cruz open his car door and put the Dodge in park.

Deputies said Cruz had bloodshot, glassy eyes and a distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his mouth. Cruz agreed to perform field sobriety tests, but did poorly.
