The baby was kidnapped in an effort to get the mother to change her testimony in a criminal case, St. Petersburg police say.

ST. PETERSBURG – Officers rescued a kidnapped baby and returned the 2 1/2-month-old to her mother this morning (Feb. 16), the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Lorraine Rainey, 35, will be charged with burglary, false imprisonment, tampering with a witness and kidnapping, police said.

Officers said Anita Johnson, 33, witnessed Rainey, her neighbor, try to run over her husband, Robert Rainey, at 4720 First Ave. N, about 3:48 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 15). Mr. Rainey was not injured, but Johnson was a key witness.

This morning, Lorraine Rainey forced her way into Johnson’s home, police said, and forced her to drive to Police Headquarters to change her statement. While Johnson was inside the building, Rainey stayed in the car with Johnson’s 2 1/2-month-old daughter, London Baker. When Johnson came out, police said Rainey and baby were gone.

Rainey left with the baby, caught a ride with an unknown person, and returned to her neighborhood, police said. When she saw police at the property, she began to walk and run around the neighborhood until officers spotted her. The baby was returned unharmed.
