Illinois Man Dies in Hillsborough Crash

The man and his wife, who is in serious condition, had just bought a retirement home in Florida and were planning to move here.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man has been accused in a crash that killed an Illinois man and seriously injured the man’s wife, according to the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office.

Jeffery Mandore, 54, of Vernon Hills, IL, died at the scene. His wife, Linda, also 54, was taken to a local hospital where she is listed in serious condition.

Mr. Mandore and his wife had just bought a retirement home here in Florida and were on the way to the airport to fly home to get ready to move, deputies said. Both were wearing seat belts.

Carlos Yordanis Fleitas-Spiedad, 36, of 6617 River Road, Tampa, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and driving with a suspended license. He had an outstanding warrant from a May 21 DUI warrant, deputies said. Additional charges are pending, deputies said. He received minor injuries in the collision.

Mr. Mandore was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla south on Kelly Road about 5:25 a.m. Monday (Aug. 8). He was trying to turn left onto Memorial Highway. Fleitas-Spiedad was driving a 2001 Ford van west on Memorial Highway and failed to stop at the red light at Kelly Road, deputies said. The Ford hit the front of the Toyota.

After the crash, Fleitas-Spiedad fledon foot and but was later caught at his home, deputies said. Fleitas-Spiedad submitted to a blood draw and had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his mouth.
