Hudson Man Charged with DUI Manslaughter in Motorcycle Crash
Spring Hill motorcyclist Paul Thomas Mello died from injuries he suffered in the Oct. 25 crash, FHP troopers said.
HUDSON – A Hudson man was arrested and charged Wednesday (March 20) in connection with a crash on U.S. 19 that killed a motorcyclist, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Donald Raymond Patenaude, 30, of Hudson, was charged with one count each of DUI Manslaughter, a felony, and Resisting an Officer, Obstructing without Violence, a misdemeanor, in connection with the death of Paul Thomas Mello, 31, of Spring Hill. Troopers said toxicology results indicated that Patenaude was under the influence of marijuana and had a BAC of 0.136.
The crash happened about 11:56 p.m. Oct. 25 on U.S. 19 north of Tower Drive in Pasco County.
Troopers said Mr. Mello was driving a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja south on U.S. 19 when Patenaude, who was driving a 1997 Ford SUV north on U.S. 19, tried to make a U-turn. the U-turn took the Ford into the path of the motorcycle and the two collided.
The motorcycle became lodged under the Ford and both vehicles caught on fire, troopers said. Mr. Mello was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point where he later died. Patenaude was not injured.
