Homeowner Shoots Intruder, St. Petersburg Police Say

The woman told officers she warned the intruder that she had a gun.

ST. PETERSBURG – A homeowner shot an intruder early this morning (Feb. 16), according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The intruder, Timothy Scott Tugman, 48, was taken to Bayfront Health with a gunshot wound. Police said he is expected to survive and will be charged with occupied residential burglary.

Police said Mary Starling Shirley, 66, saw a man she did not know coming into her home through a side window about 6:13 a.m. She told officers she warned the man that she was armed and that, when he did not retreat, she shot him. Police said the handgun she used to shoot Tugman was a large caliber revolver.
