Homeless Man Accused in Spring Hill Burglaries

He confessed to committing five burglaries and is suspected of committing others, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

HERNANDO COUNTY – Deputies have arrested and charged a homeless man with a string of burglaries in the Spring Hill area, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jason Edward Voigt, 41, was charged with five counts of burglary to a dwelling and one count each of resisting an officer without violence, providing a false name to law enforcement, attempted grand theft auto, and tampering with evidence.

Deputies said Voigt admitted to committing a total of five burglaries to dwellings in the Spring Hill Area. At this time, there are several other burglary investigations Voigt is suspected of committing, Those cases remain under investigation.

Hernando sheriff’s detectives said they began investigating a series of dwelling burglaries in the southern portion of Spring Hill earlier this month. The burglaries all appeared to have been done using the same method. During the burglaries, various items, including jewelry, clothing, and currency were stolen.

Voigt, a homeless man who hangs out in the Spring Hill area, was identified as the suspect. Deputies issued several warrants for his arrest and had patrol deputies keep an eye out for him.

Early Friday (July 27) morning, a patrol deputy was conducting security checks of businesses along County Line Road when he saw a man matching Voigt’s description. When the deputy talked with Voigt, he tried to conceal his identity by providing a false name.

When the deputy tried to take Voigt into custody, Voigt tried to resist causing the deputy to use his Taser. Voigt was then taken into custody and medically cleared before being taken to speak with detectives.
