David Gee has served as Hillsborough County sheriff since 2004.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – David Gee, who has served as Hillsborough sheriff for 13 years, announced today (May 19) that he is retiring, effective Sept. 30.

Gee announced his retirement in a letter to employees:

“After over 40 years of law enforcement service, I have decided to retire at the end of September. This decision has not been made lightly and was one of the most difficult decisions that I have made in my career. Each of my Sheriff’s Office family and the citizens of our community is very important to me. I have dedicated my life to serving others and hope that I have served well.

“Throughout the years, serving the community has been my priority and it has been an honor and privilege to serve with you by my side. Although law enforcement’s reward is not tangible, it comes in the knowledge that each of you has made a difference for countless persons. Through your commitment to excellence, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is one of the best law
enforcement agencies in the state of Florida as well as nationwide. I know that each of you will continue to serve and protect the citizens of Hillsborough County with the highest level of integrity and dedication.

“I want to thank each of you for your remarkable service. It has been an honor and privilege for me to be your colleague, your friend and your extended family member. It is now time for me, however, to concentrate and devote my full attention and support to my family. I wish each of you well and ask that you continue to provide the level of commitment necessary in making this
transition as smooth as possible.”

Gee also informed Florida Gov. Rick Scott of his decision in a three-paragraph letter:

“After over 40 years of service, I write to tender my resignation as sheriff of Hillsborough County, effective 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30, 2017.

“I have been honored to serve the citizens of the state of Florida and Hillsborough County. I am grateful for the trust and confidence they have placed in me.

“It has been a privilege to work with you and I appreciate the support you have given me as well as the support you have provided to law enforcement. It has been my honor to have served with some of the best professionals in this great state.”

Gee, a lifelong resident of Hillsborough, worked in progressive positions of leadership, including homicide investigator, internal affairs supervisor, public information officer, chief financial officer and chief deputy until he was elected Sheriff in 2004. As sheriff, Gee is responsible for managing one of the largest suburban sheriff’s offices in the nation and an annual budget of more than $405 million.

He is a member of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, chairman of the Attorney General’s Region 4 Gang Reduction Task Force, chair of the FHP Jurisdiction Subcommittee of the Governor’s Law Enforcement Consolidation Task Force and co-chair of the Region 4 Domestic Security Task Force. He is a past southeast region director for the Airborne Law Enforcement Association. He serves as a board member of A Kids Place of Tampa Bay, board member of the Judeo Christian Health Clinic, and an active member of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. He is the former chairman of the Brandon Boys and Girls Club, former chair for Brandon Regional Hospital, former board member of the Hillsborough County Head Start Program, and former security consultant to the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
