HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A detention deputy was injured Tuesday (Feb. 28) when a jail inmate attacked him, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

Detention Deputy D. Hernandez, 31, suffered a twisted ankle, bruised knee, and abrasions to his neck as a result of the attack. Hernandez has worked for the Hillsborough sheriff for 10 months.

Kiondre Y Zachary, 22, was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. He was in jail on an unrelated burglary charge. He was not hurt and was transferred to an isolation cell.

The attack happened about 12:30 p.m. in the jail pod where there were about 72 inmates. Deputies said Zachery approached Hernandez from behind and wrapped a cloth towel around his neck in an attempt to strangle him. Hernandez managed to escape from Zachery’s grasp and was subsequently subdued by Hernandez and other inmates until help could arrive.
