Hillsborough Deputy Shoots, Injures Suspect

Guy Russell McDonald | HIllsborough Sheriff | Arrests

The deputy was not injured, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Ruskin man was arrested Wednesday (Nov. 29) after a Hillsborough deputy shot and injured him when he refused to drop a gun he was carrying, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Guy Russell McDonald, 49, of Ruskin, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where he was treated for non- life threatening injuries. After he was discharged, he was interviewed by deputies then taken to the Orient Road Jail. He was charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Mijail Sequeira, 31, who has worked for the department since April 27, 2014, was not injured. He was put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, as is policy in use of force situations.

Deputies answered a 9-1-1 call about 10 a.m. about a man seen with a gun knocking on doors and ringing doorbells in a residential area at Greenchop Place in Riverview. The man, later identified as McDonald, left the area in a van before deputies arrived.

He and a female passenger were later located in a field behind the neighborhood. Deputies said he got out of the van he was in with a gun in his hand and refused multiple commands to drop the weapon. Sequeira, who said he feared for his life and that of others, fired at and struck McDonald one time.

The female passenger, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for conditions not related to this incident.

Deputies said that McDonald is a registered sex offender in North Carolina and Pennsylvania and has prior criminal charges that include crimes against children, larceny and burglaries.
