Hillsborough Deputies Charge Man in Hit-and-Run Crash

Gilbert Lorenzo Escobedo | Arrests | Hillsborough Sheriff

A motorcyclist died as a result of the crash, Hillsborough deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Riverview man is accused of leaving the scene of a crash in which a motorcyclist died, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Gilbert Lorenzo Escobedo, 19, of 12205 Glenshire Drive in Riverview, was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. Zachary Taylor Marcano, 21, of Ruskin, died in Friday’s (Oct. 28) crash, deputies said.

Escobedo admitted to his involvement in the crash, deputies said. Escobedo and Mr. Marcano, who knew each other, got into an argument about 3:25 p.m. Escobedo, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck, tried to flee the altercation and drove north on 30th Street NE towards Shell Point Road in Ruskin.

Escobedo, who was driving about 70 mph, saw Mr. Marcano, who was on a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle, approaching from behind. Escobedo told deputies that Marcano drove along side his
truck and punched the driver’s side rearview mirror before pulling in front of the pickup as they were traveling about 60 mph. As they approached the intersection of 19th Avenue NE, Escobedo said that Mr. Marcano quickly downshifted and slowed rapidly. Escobedo told deputies he was following too closely behind Marcano, was unable to stop and hit the rear of the motorcycle, causing
Mr. Marcano to be thrown from the bike.

Both the motorcycle and Mr. Marcano slid into the intersection of 19th Avenue NE, where he and the bike were both hit by another vehicle that was being driven west on 19th Street NE. Mr. Marcano died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

After hitting the motorcycle, Escobedo fled the scene of the crash and drove to his residence where, deputies said, his truck was found. A search and seizure warrant was completed and the Chevrolet truck was impounded for processing.

Escobedo came forward Saturday (Oct. 29) to talk with deputies about what happened. He was arrested and charged.
