Hernando officials are warning people to take precautions against thieves who smash car windows and grab valuables.

HERNANDO COUNTY -This county’s Parks and Recreation Department is warning park goers to take care.

Three county parks have had recent smash and grab incidents that are currently under investigation, parks officials said. Anderson Snow Park, Rotary Centennial Dog Park and Veterans Memorial Park were targeted by thieves who smash car windows and grab valuables from the vehicle. According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, vehicle burglary is often a crime of opportunity. There are several things you can do to deter a thief from targeting your vehicle:

Always lock your vehicle when you leave it, even if you will only be away from it for a short time.
Never leave valuables in your vehicle (i.e., iPods, cell phones, computers, purses, etc.)
Do not leave loose change in your vehicle.ever leave a firearm in your vehicle. If a thief gets your firearm, he/she is now armed and a greater threat to the community. This is especially true for the deputy that approaches that now-armed criminal.
Consider placing a reliable alarm on vehicle(s) and be sure to activate the alarm each time you leave the vehicle.
Cover newly purchased items and packages to deter theft.

“Removing valuables and locking your car doors should become a habit, just like fastening your seat-belt. It only takes a second and can almost always prevent you from becoming a victim of vehicle burglary,” Sheriff Al Nienhuis said. “We are using both traditional and high-tech methods to combat this activity.”
