Hernando Man Dies after Deputy-Involved Shooting
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation into the shooting.
HERNANDO COUNTY – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in which a man died.
Joseph Allen Schlosser, 69, died at a trauma center, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said. The sergeant and deputy involved in the shooting were not injured.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 15) when, according to initial reports, a healthcare professional notified 911 dispatchers of a possible suicidal person who had numerous weapons inside the residence at 10264 Ridge Top Loop in the Enclave subdivision within Woodland Waters, Weeki Wachee.
A deputy, who has crisis intervention training, and a sergeant, who has crisis intervention training and advanced de-escalation training, encountered the individual within the home, the Sheriff’s Office said. Initial reports indicate one of the first responders attempted to use less lethal means to take the subject into custody. Shortly after, an undetermined number of shots were fired. Mr. Schlosser was taken to a trauma center where he was pronounced dead.
The deputy and the sergeant have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol. FDLE will conduct the investigation into the shooting.
