Hernando Deputy Dragged During Traffic Stop

HERNANDO COUNTY – A deputy was injured today (Aug 7) when she was dragged for a short distance by a driver who was fleeing a traffic stop, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy Tonya Shutt, 48, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are considered non-life-threatening.

The driver, Melissa Lloyd, 47, was arrested in Pasco County. Lloyd was charged with fleeing to elude, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, and felony driving with a suspended or revoked license.

About 3:27 p.m.Shutt conducted a traffic stop on a grey GMC Sierra on McKethan Road south of Cortez Boulevard almost to the Pasco County Line.

Shutt approached the vehicle, on the driver’s side, to speak with Lloyd and obtain a driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. Almost immediately, at about 3:28 p.m., Lloyd began to flee from the stop,
dragging Shutt for a short time/short distance.

Shutt radioed for help, saying Lloyd had fled south toward Pasco County. Lloyd was arrested in Pasco.
