Hernando Deputies Spot Fleeing Suspect from the Air

KYLE AUSTIN SCHWIETERMAN | Hernando Sheriff | Arrests

Hernando deputies in the aviation unit said they saw him jumping fences to avoid being spotted by deputies searching for him on the ground.

BROOKSVILLE – A Brooksville man was caught after a short chase Tuesday (Jan. 22) when he was spotted from the air by deputies with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office aviation unit.

Kyle Austin Schwieterman, 23, of Brooksville, was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Methadone, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Felony Driving While License Suspended or Revoked, Resisting without Violence, Providing False Name to Law Enforcement, and Residential Burglary.

Deputies said they saw a gas-powered scooter near the intersection of Cortez Boulevard and WPA Road in Brooksville about 9:18 p.m. Tuesday that was being driven without a license plate attached.

The driver, later identified as Schwieterman, initially told deputies he recently purchased the scooter from a friend and showed them a bill of sale for review.

During questioning, Schwieterman at first gave deputies a false name. While deputies were working to confirm his identity, Schwieterman fled the area on foot.

Upon closer review of the bill of sale, deputies noticed the name appearing on the paperwork was that of Schwieterman, who had an active Hernando County warrant for violation of drug offender probation. He also has a suspended license.

As Schwieterman fled the area he dropped a backpack that he had been carrying. Deputies found a digital scale with residue and a plastic bag that contained a crystal-like substance later identified as
methamphetamine. Another tin container that contained methadone was also found in the backpack.

The K-9 and aviation units were called in to help search for Schwieterman.

During the search a citizen living in the area of Gordon Loop told deputies about a suspicious person in the area.

Deputies went to Gordon Loop and the air unit was able to find Schwieterman as he was jumping fences to avoid being spotted by deputies searching for him on the ground.

After a short chase, Schwieterman was taken into custody in the backyard of a home where he had been attempting to hide.
