Tampa police have charged a man with the fatal stabbing.

TAMPA – A Tampa man has been accused of stabbing a HART bus driver to death, accroding to the Tampa Police Department.

Justin Ryan McGriff, 35, of Tampa, was charged with one count each of First Degree Murder and Resisting Arrest without Violence. The decision to charge McGriff with the murder came today (May 19) after McGriff had been arrested shortly after Saturday’s (May 18) murder and accused of resisting arrest.

Police said the murder happened about 4:12 p.m. when a passenger on a southbound bus belonging to the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority stabbed the driver.

Police said the suspect got off the bus and ran west toward I-275.

TPD officers spotted a man fitting the description given by a witness and approached the man, who was later identified as McGriff. Police said he fled and ran under the Interstate, and then on to I-275 where he was
caught along the southbound lanes.

There is no clear motive for the stabbing. TPD detectives said they have spoken with witnesses who were passengers on the bus, and have reviewed video from the bus.
