FHP: Drunk Driver Hits, Kills Tow Truck Driver

The tow truck driving was helping a motorist, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A tow truck driver was killed early this morning (Nov. 27) when he was hit by a drunk driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Danny Ray Hand, 42, of New Port Richey, died at the scene.

Leandro Corrales Perez, 30, of Tampa, was charged with DUI manslaughter, troopers said.

The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. on southbound I-275 south of Fowler Avenue. Mr. Hand, a tow truck driver for Crockett’s Towing and Recovery, had parked his truck on the outside shoulder with all caution lights activated. Mr. Hand was standing by the side of the highway helping a motorist. Perez, who was imparied, troopers said, failed to maintain control of the 2001 Toyota Camry he was driving and hit Mr. Perez.
