FHP Charges Man with DUI Manslaughter in Crash That Killed Motorcyclist

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Plant City man has been charged with DUI manslaughter after a traffic crash that killed a motorcyclist, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Robert Eugene Shook, 74, of New Matamoras, OH, died at Lakeland Regional Hospital where he was taken after the crash.

Jorge Alberto Mejia Perez, 52, of Plant City, was charged with one count each of DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, and driving with no license involving a death.

The crash happened about 3:57 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 38 and Knights Griffin Road. Perez was driving a 2000 Nissan Maxima west on Knights Griffin Road when he failed to stop at a red traffic light, troopers said. The Nissan collided with a 1990 Honda motorcycle driven by Mr. Shook, which was headed north on SR 39.

After the arrival of paramedics and an FHP trooper, Perez tried to flee on foot. FHP Cpl. Neil Browning chased him and caught him, troopers said.
