David Chase Tucker | Florida Highway Patrol | Arrests

Troopers used evidence from a burned car and confidential tips to solve the case, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Brandon man was charged Friday (Feb. 24) in a two-year-old hit and run that killed a Tampa man, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

David Chase Tucker, 26, of 2134 Redleaf Drive in Brandon was charged with one count each of tampering/destroying evidence and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. Joshua Andrew Contreras, 24, of Tampa, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 11:06 p.m. Jan. 27, 2015, on I-4 east of U.S. 301. Troopers said the 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck that Mr. Contreras was driving became disabled. He pulled over to the shoulder of the road and got out of the truck. He was standing near the left rear of the truck when a 2014 Nissan Altima driven by Tucker traveled onto the outside shoulder and hit Mr. Contreras. The Nissan continued westbound without stopping, troopers said.

Troopers said they arrested Tucker today after an extensive investigation that involved physical evidence from the rented Nissan, which was found burned in Miami. Troopers said they also received confidential tips that helped them solve the case.
