Pinellas Crime | Local News | TB Reporter

Pinellas sheriff’s deputies say the Indian Rocks Beach woman shot and killed her ex-husband on March 7.

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Pinellas County Sheriff’s detectives on Friday (March 13)  arrested the ex-wife of a former St. Petersburg police sergeant and charged her with shooting and killing him.

Cara A. Ryan, 45, of 2601 1st Street, Unit A, Indian Rocks Beach, was charged with one count of second degree murder. Deputies say Ryan shot her ex-husband and former St. Petersburg police sergeant  John Joseph Rush in her home around 10:15 p.m. March 7. After Rush was shot he left the residence and went to a neighbor’s home, where 911 was called. Rush was pronounced dead at the scene.

During detective interviews, Ryan’s initial statement advised detectives that she invited Rush over to her home via text message. She advised while he was in her home she received a text from another male which upset Rush. She advised he then sexually assaulted her and she shot Rush out of self-defense. But deputies say that, during the course of the investigation, Ryan continued to make conflicting statements and it was determined that her statements and physical evidence did not coincide. Ryan was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.

The investigation continues. For information, see pcsoweb.com.
