Clearwater police said he refused to pull over when told to do so and continued northbound in the wrong lanes.

CLEARWATER – A Dunedin man was accused of drunken driving this morning (May 24) after he drove the wrong-way on U.S. 19, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Anthony Tucker, 60, of Dunedin, was charged with one count of Driving Under the Influence.

Police said an officer noticed Tucker driving north in the southbound lanes on U.S. 19 south of Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard about 3:30 a.m.  At about the same time, Largo police officers issued a bulletin for a wrong-way driver headed north from their jurisdiction.

Multiple Clearwater officers converged on the highway to alert and stop other motorists and to try to stop the wrong-way vehicle. Officers said Tucker refused to pull over and continued northbound in the wrong lanes. Police used stop sticks but his vehicle still kept heading north.

He eventually came to a stop near Countryside Boulevard when he was unable to get around a large flatbed tow truck.

Police said he smelled like alcohol, was swaying and stumbling and performed poorly on field sobriety tests.
