The driver kept going after he hit the crossing guard, St. Petersburg police said.
ST. PETERSBURG – A 72-year-old school crossing guard was killed by a drunk driver Tuesday (Nov. 8), according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
David Roundtree, 72, was pronounced dead at the hospital. He had been a school crossing guard for three years, police said.
Charles Hunter Walton, 21, of 475 2nd St. N, No. 303, St. Petersburg, was charged with DUI manslaughter. Police said an 18-year-old woman passenger was not charged.
The crash happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. when Mr. Roundtree was setting up traffic cones on on 9th Avenue N in preparation for the 2:35 p.m. dismissal at Mt. Vernon Elementary, 4629 13th Ave N. Police said a silver Toyota Scion driven by Walton, which was traveling westbound on 9th Avenue, hit a pickup truck then hit Mr. Roundtree. It also hit a school zone sign and a small tree and kept going several blocks. Police said a witness told them the Toyota had been driving erratically for several blocks before the crash.
