Driver Swims to Safety after Clearwater Crash

He was arrested after the crash, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

CLEARWATER – A Largo man was arrested after crashing his car and ending up in the water, the Clearwater Police Department said.

Ryan Tyler Jones, 21, of Largo, was charged with DUI and careless driving. Police said he registered 0.22 when tested for alcohol.

The crash happened at 800 Bayway Blvd. at the Bayside condominiums. Police said witnesses told them that Jones was speeding as he drove a Jeep north across the bridge. He failed to make the turn at the north end of the bridge and ended up in the water.

Jones was able to get out of the Jeep and swim to shore.

The Clearwater Fire Department dive team searched the Jeep to make sure there were no other occupants. The Coast Guard check the area to make sure there was no one else in the water.
