Driver of Stolen Car Charged with Vehicular Homicide

The charge is in addition to other charges he faced from the crash.

ST. PETERSBURG – The driver of a stolen car has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the death of Yalanda Speights, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Ms. Speights, 46, was a passenger in a PT Cruiser that was hit Nov. 24 by a stolen car that, police said, was being driven by Carl McKinley. Ms. Speights died of her injuries Dec. 1. Her mother, Mae Speights, 61, who was driving the PT Cruiser, was seriously injured. (Click here for related story.)

In addition to the charge of Vehicular Homicide, McKinley, 20, of St. Petersburg, is also charged with Grand Theft Motor Vehicle.

Three others – Lazarius Faulk, 19; Clifford Washington; 19; and Jaquez Rouse, 18 – were in the car with McKinley. Each has been charged with Grand Theft Motor Vehicle. All are from St. Petersburg.

The crash happened about 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of 18th Avenue and 25th Street S in St. Petersburg.

Information about the crash is limited. Police said the investigation is continuing. They said an officer was flagged down about a carload of men in a Hyundai pointing a gun at someone.

The car, a stolen Hyundai Sonata, was later spotted going at a high rate of speed on 18th Avenue S. There was no police pursuit, officers said

Shortly after, the Hyundai and PT Cruiser crashed.
