Driver, Fleeing from Traffic Stop, Crashes in St. Petersburg

Richard B. Odoms | Pinellas Sheriff | Arrests

The driver and passenger in one of the cars he hit were injured, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

ST. PETERSBURG – Three people were injured, one seriously, in a traffic crash caused by a man who was fleeing from a traffic stop, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Shaheed Wright, 24, the driver of one of the cars that was hit, and his passenger Dontay Anderson, 25, both of St. Petersburg, were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. Wright was treated and released. Anderson, who was not wearing a seat belt, is being treated for serious injuries.

Richard B. Odoms, 37, of St. Petersburg, the driver of the other car, was taken to Northside Hospital where he was treated and released into the custody of deputies. His passenger, Daysha Ellis-Davis, 22, of Tampa, was not injured. Investigators said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Odoms was arrested and charged with one count each of aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended or revoked license, reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, possession of hydromorphone and possession of MDMA.

Deputies assigned to the violent crimes task force said they tried to stop a 2013 Nissan Altima driven by Odoms at the intersection of 38th Avenue N and 66th Street in St. Petersburg about 1:54 a.m. Wednesday (June 14). The Nissan did not stop but fled east on 38th Avenue North at a high rate of speed. The traffic stop was terminated.

VCTF members said they did not pursue the Nissan but had intermittent visual contact of the vehicle from a distance as it turned southbound onto 28th Street N. VCTF lost visual contact with the Nissan as it reached 22nd Avenue N at which point they said they began to circulate the area. An undercover VCTF deputy driving an unmarked car regained brief visual contact with the vehicle as it turned westbound onto 7th Avenue N from 28th Street. Shortly after at the intersection of 32nd Street N, deputies said, the Nissan crashed into the driver’s side of a 2011 Honda Civic driven by Wright. Deputies said that at no time were they pursuing the Nissan.

After the crash, Odoms continued driving into the eastbound lanes of 7th Avenue N, where he struck two parked vehicles before being taken into custody.
