Driver Charged after Pedestrian Dies in Madeira Beach

Ashley Konfort | Pinella Sheriff | Arrests

The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff.

MADEIRA BEACH – A woman has been charged with DUI manslaughter after a traffic crash that killed a North Port woman Wednesday (Feb. 8), the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Nancy Durham-Jones, 73, of North Port, died at the scene.

Ashley Konfort, 26, of 278 116th Ave., Apt. 104 on Treasure Island, was charged with one count each of DUI manslaughter and possession of marijuana, deputies said.

The crash happened about 8:24 p.m. on Gulf Boulevard just north of 130th Avenue in Madeira Beach. Deputies said Mrs. Durham-Jones was walking with her husband when she activated the flashing warning beacon for the crosswalk on Gulf Boulevard and proceeded to cross from east to west in the marked crosswalk.

A 2014 Hyundai Elantra being driven by Konfort was traveling south on Gulf. Deputies said Konfort failed to yield the right of way and hit Mrs. Durham-Jones with the front passenger side of the Hyundai while she was in the crosswalk. Paramedics from Madeira Beach Fire Rescue pronounced Mrs. Durham-Jones dead at the scene.

Deputies said Konfort showed signs of impairment at the scene of the crash and admitted to taking multiple prescription drugs. Deputies said they also found marijuana inside the Hyundai. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
