Arrests | Crime | Jail

One person was critically injured. Another received serious injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man is accused of driving under the influence after a traffic crash Friday (Jan. 20) sent him and two others to the hospital, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Shelby Higgins Light, 47, a passenger, was critically injured.  Robert David Schmiedebush, 35, the driver of one of the vehicles, was seriously injured. The other driver, Terrence Robert Light, 45, received minor injuries. All three are Tampa residents and all were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, troopers said.

Terrance Robert Light was later arrested and charged with two counts of DUI (serious bodily injury). Troopers said he provided a breath sample of 0.151. Anything higher than 0.08 is considered drunk in Florida.

The crash happened about 10:25 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 597 and Carrollwood Place Circle. Troopers said a 2005 GMC pickup truck driven by Terrence Robert Light was trying to turn left into Carrollwood Place Circle when it traveled into the path of a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Schmiedebush. The impact caused both vehicles to spin.
