Driver Accused of DUI, Hit and Run in Deaths of Two Motorcyclists

The crash closed U.S. 301 for about seven hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Riverview man has been charged in the deaths of two motorcyclists from a traffic crash Saturday (April 14) night on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kerry Jason Webb, 37, of Riverview, the motorcycle driver, died at the scene. His passenger, Angelina Elizabeth Torrey, 25, of Valrico, died at Brandon Regional Hospital, where she was taken after the crash.

Benson Craig Johnston, of Riverview, was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, and felony DUI (third offense). He was not injured in the crash.

The crash happened about 9:35 p.m. on U.S. 301 approaching Johanna Avenue. Troopers said Johnston was driving a 2009 Lexus RX350 south on U.S. 301 in the left turn lane. Johnston turned left into the path of a 2013 Suzuki GSX-R750 being driven by Mr. Webb north on U.S. 301 in the center lane. The motorcycle and Lexus collided. Mr. Webb and Ms. Torrey were thrown from the bike.

After the crash, troopers said, Johnston fled on foot to his residence on Lake St. Charles Boulevard in Riverview. He was found there by Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies who were helping FHP troopers. Deputies took Johnston back to the scene where he was arrested.

The roads were closed until about 4:30 a..m.
