Driver Accused of DUI in Deputy-Involved Crash
No serious injuries were reported in the three-vehicle crash, according to the Pinellas County sheriff.
ST. PETERSBURG – A St. Petersburg man was arrested Friday (May 5) after a three-car crash that involved a Pinellas sheriff’s deputy.
Diangelo Merritt, 31, was charged with one count each of DUI involving property damage and second offense driving while license was revoked.
The crash happened about 1:13 p.m. at 34th Street and First Avenue N in St. Petersburg. Deputies said Merritt crashed into the rear of a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Kenneth Nagle, 57, of Gulfport, MS. The impact pushed the Blazer into the rear of a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Cpl. Stevie Thomas, 49, a Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy. Both Nagle and Thomas had been stopped for a traffic light.
Neither Thomas nor Nagle was injured. Deputies said Merritt initially complained of minor injuries but refused medical treatment.
Merritt showed signs of impairment and admitted having a suspended license and drinking alcohol, deputies said.
