A Hernando deputy who had stopped for dinner instead arrested a man in a Kentucky Fried Chicken drive-through.

BROOKSVILLE – A Hernando sheriff’s lieutenant who stopped at a Kentucky Fried Chicken smelled marijuana instead of chicken and ended up arresting a man in the restaurant drive-through.

Isaiah Unique Shaw, 23, of Brooksville, was charged with one count of possession of marijuana more than 20 grams, a felony. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said the seized drugs weighed 110 grams.

Deputies said that the department’s night watch commander, Lt. William Power, stopped Saturday (Sept. 29) for a quick bite to eat at the Kentucky Fried Chicken at 1145 S Broad St. in Brooksville.

Immediately upon entering the restaurant, Power said he smelled a strong odor of fresh marijuana. Power discovered that the smell was actually blowing into the restaurant, through the open drive-through window.

Power left the restaurant and approached a gray Nissan Versa that was in the drive-through.

The Nissan was occupied by a woman driver and Shaw, who was a passenger. Power talked with Shaw, telling him that he was able to smell marijuana and he believed it was coming from their car.

Shaw told Power that the smell must be coming from the car behind them in the drive-through. Power verified this was not the case by walking back to check the next vehicle in line. As Power moved away from the Nissan and toward the next vehicle, the smell began to dissipate.

As Power approached the Nissan again, the smell of marijuana became very strong again, even over the smell of the cigarettes that both occupants were now smoking and the four bags of food they had just purchased from the KFC.

When backup units arrived, both the Nissan and the occupants were searched.

During a search, deputies said they found a large plastic bag containing several smaller bags of marijuana that were under the passenger seat.

Deputies said Shaw told them the marijuana was his and was for his own personal use.
