Deputy Shoots, Critically Injures Suspect in Hillsborough

The deputy shot him after he “aggressively approached” with a screwdriver, according to the Hillsborough sheriff.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A man was critically injured late Wednesday (Nov. 29) when he was shot by a deputy who said he was in fear of his life, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Babak Payrow, 35, of Tampa, was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Deputy David Cloud, 28, who has worked with the department since September 2014 was not injured. He will be placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is department policy.

The information available is preliminary and deputies cautioned that it could change as the investigation continues.

Cloud was on routine patrol in a residential neighborhood when he saw a suspicious man, later identified as Payrow, walking in the 5300 block of Brushy Creek Drive in Carrollwood Meadows. Cloud followed the man for a short distance. He got out of his patrol vehicle try talking to the man.

The man immediately turned around and began aggressively approaching Cloud. Cloud said he gave numerous commands to get back but the man continued aggressively advancing and pulled a 10-inch screw driver from a bag. T

Cloud, who said he was in fear for his life, pulled his service weapon and shot Payrow at least one time.

Detectives are processing the crime scene and conducting neighborhood interviews. Deputies said Payrow has a prior charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence and
resisting arrest. Criminal charges are pending against Payrow in connection with this latest incident.
