Deputies: Woman Caught Stealing Christmas Card Meant for Mail Carrier

PINELLAS COUNTY – A Clearwater woman was arrested after she was discovered inside a home with a Christmas card meant for the mail carrier, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deborah Margaret McClung, 61, of  Clearwater was charged with one count each of burglary to an occupied structure and violation of probation grand theft. Deputies said additional charges of grand theft are probable.

The burglary happened about noon Friday (Dec. 22) at a residence on Keene Road in unincorporated Clearwater. Deputies said the 74-year-old homeowner called them to report a burglary. She told deputies she had left a Christmas card containing $25 cash for her mail carrier on the front glass storm door of her home. She told deputies that she found McClung standing in her laundry room holding the envelope that was meant for her mail carrier.

The homeowner said she asked McClung what she was doing and McClung responded, “The mailman does not come down here, I will bring it to him.”

McClung opened the envelope. The homeowner asked McClung to return the envelope. McClung handed the envelope to the homeowner and left through the back door sidence. McClung drove away in a 2008 Toyota Solaris.

On Saturday (Dec. 23), while patrolling the neighborhoods near that home, deputies said they saw McClung’s Car and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Keene Road and Hercules. Deputies said they found addressed envelopes and mail from about 20 residences throughout the Clearwater area inside the car. They said they also found Amazon packages including Fitbit fitness trackers and new clothing with the tags still intact.

Deputies said McClung admitted to investigators she committed the burglary on Keene Road,, but became uncooperative when asked about the mail and additional items found in the vehicle.
