Deputies: Gibsonton Man Stabbed Family Dog

He stabbed the pit bull mix dog after an argument with his father, Hillsborough deputies said.

GIBSONTON – A Gibsonton man is facing charges of animal cruelty after he stabbed the family dog several times after arguing with his father, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Robert Abbott Jr., 34, of Gibsonton, was charged with one count each of Aggravated Animal Cruelty and Resisting Arrest without Violence.

Hillsborough deputies were called to an address on California Street. about 4 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they discovered that Abbott Jr. had argued with his father.

During the argument, deputies said, Abbott Jr. got a knife and stabbed the family’s pit bull mix dog several times causing severe injuries to the animal.

When deputies entered the residence, they said they found that Abbott Jr. had barricaded himself inside a bathroom with the knife. He repeatedly refused commands to come out of the bathroom and surrender. After several minutes of negotiations, Abbott Jr. allowed deputies to enter the bathroom and take him into custody without further incident.

Hillsborough County Animal Services responded to the scene and arranged emergency veterinary services for the injured dog.
