Deputies Make Arrest in Tampa Shooting Death

William Dennard Jr. | Hillsborough Sheriff | Arrests

He was found about a tenth of a mile from the scene of the shooting, Hillsborough sheriff’s deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH – Deputies have arrested a Tampa man in connection with a Monday night shooting death, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

William Dennard, Jr., 20, of Tampa, was charged with one count each of murder in the second degree, felon in possession of a firearm, and carrying a concealed firearm. The charges arise from the death of Bernard Jinks, 26, of Tampa, who died at Tampa General Hospital where he was taken after the shooting.

Deputies said they were called to the scene about 11 p.m. Monday (Feb. 5) in response to a 9-1-1 call from someone who reported hearing several shots fired nearby. When deputies arrived, they found Mr. Jinks suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Dennard, who matched the description of the person seen leaving the area of the shooting, was found about a tenth of a mile away. Seputies said they found a loaded 9mm pistol in Dennard’s right front pocket. The handgun had a magazine with four rounds in the magazine and one round chambered.

Surveillance video from the incident scene shows Dennard approaching Mr. Jinks with his arm extended, which is consistent with someone’s pointing a firearm at Mr. Jinks. Deputies said Dennard tried to make physical contact with Mr. Jinks then backed away. Dennard, they said, raised the firearm and shot Mr. Jinks one time.
