The 83-year-old woman is in critical condition, Clearwater police said.

CLEARWATER – Police have arrested a man they said tried to beat his elderly mother to death.

Catherine Richards, 83, is in critical condition at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with multiple broken bones and internal injuries, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Daniel Edward Richards, 60, of 1737 Linwood Circle is in the Pinellas County Jail charged with attempted felony murder, according to jail records.

Police said Richards and his mother got into an argument Monday (July 18) that turned physical when he attacked her. Police said he threw his mother to the floor, then kicked and stomped on her. He gave police multiple accounts of how the injuries were sustained, but detectives were able to disprove these reports, they said.
