LEALMAN – Two brothers have been arrested and accused of seriously injuring one man by hitting in the head with a rock and of threatening to hit another with a shovel, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Peter J. Hoffstetter, 64, of Lealman, suffered a head injury that is considered life threatening. William Clark, 60, also of Lealman, was not injured.

Jamari Devont-Shadi Brown, 19, of St. Petersburg, was charged with one count each of aggravated assault and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Dayquan Brown, 20, was charged with one count of aggravated assault. Deputies said Jamari Brown admitted to assaulting Clark and striking Hoffstetter with the rock. They said Dayquan Brown admitted to assaulting Clark with a shovel.

The incident happened about 2:33 p.m. June 22 on Grove Park Avenue in the unincorporated Lealman area. Deputies said Clark was standing outside his apartment when he saw two unidentified males trespassing and cutting through the apartment complex parking lot.

Clark yelled at the men and told them to stay off the property. The men left and returned carrying rocks and a shovel. Deputies said the men threatened Clark and ran after him with the rocks and shovel. Clark retreated into his apartment where he called 911.

As the men were walking away from Clark’s apartment, Hoffstetter stepped outside of his apartment and confronted the men for trespassing. Deputies said there was a verbal argument between Hoffstetter and the two men. During the argument, one of the men threw a rock and hit Hoffstetter in the head. Hoffstetter fell and the men fled on foot.

When deputies arrived, Hoffstetter was found conscious lying on the ground outside his apartment. Hoffstetter said he was having an argument with two unidentified men when he tripped over a parking space curb as he was retreating back to his apartment. Hoffstetter never disclosed that he was struck in the head with a rock.

Paramedics from Lealman Fire Department responded to the scene; however, Hoffstetter refused medical attention and refused to be taken to the hospital. Initially it appeared Hoffstetter had suffered minor injuries as a result of tripping and falling on the ground.

Detectives said that, later that same evening, Hoffstetter’s medical condition worsened and he called for paramedics. Hoffstetter was taken to Bay Pines Veteran’s Hospital where his medical condition worsened.

Hoffstetter was later flown to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg hospital for a head injury that was considered life-threatening.

During the course of the investigation, deputies obtained surveillance video of the incident. The surveillance video confirmed that Hoffstetter was arguing with two men when one of them threw a rock at Hoffstetter and struck him in the head.
