Boyfriend Held Girlfriend and Her Son Hostage, Largo Police Say

LARGO – A man is accused of holding his girlfriend and her 5-year-old son hostage and threatening to kill her, according to the Largo Police Department.

John Desormeaux III was arrested after a three-hour standoff, police said. Desormeaux, 43, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, felony battery and violation of a protective injunction from domestic violence, Pinellas County Jail records show.

Officers were called to the scene about 2:58 p.m. Saturday (May 6) after his girlfriend called 911 saying that her boyfriend was holding her and her 5-year-old son hostage. She told officials that Desormeaux was threatening to kill her and kill himself. She and her son were able to escape from the residence to a neighbor.

Police evacuated adjoining residences and said they tried to contact Desormeaux by phone, social media, and megaphone but failed. The tactical apprehension and control team took control of the situation. A throw telephone was tossed into the house to try making contact with Desormeaux, but that also failed.

Officers got into the house through several windows and found Desormeaux in one of the bedrooms. Desormeaux was taken into custody about 5:52 p.m. Police said the found a loaded firearm in the same bedroom where they arrested Desormeaux.
