Boy, 13, Threatened Mass Shooting, Hernando Deputies Say

Deputies said the teen told them his posting on social media “was only a joke.” Deputies said there is no danger.

WEEKI WACHEE – A student at Winding Waters K-8 school was arrested Thursday (May 2) after he threatened a mass shooting on social media, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

The name of the 13-year-old boy was withheld because of his age. He was charged with one count of Written Threat to Conduct Mass Shooting and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center in Ocala.

Three students told Hernando Deputy Paul Smith, the school resource officer at Winding Waters late Thursday that a threat that had been posted on social media by another student at the Weeki Wachee school.

Smith found the social media post and interviewed the student in the presence of his parents. Deputies said the boy told Smith the post “was only a joke.”

n an abundance of caution, the Hernando County School District sent a robo-call to the parents of all students who attend Winding Waters.

This incident has been thoroughly investigated and an arrest made. Deputies said there is no danger to students and/or the school campus.
